Permit/Plan Submittal

Well, we just stayed up all night to finish off our plans for submittal to get a building permit... they're all done and submitted now. Alex even got us a permit to demo while we're waiting for the plans to be approved. So this weekend is officially demo day! So far all my rsvp's for the demo party have been "no" on facebook and evite. Hmmm... I don't know how to feel about that just yet... but the long wait is over! We finally get to see what is behind that strange wood?panel? in front of the fireplace??

We are planning on getting a 30 cubic yard dumpster from 1888Hauler8.com -- best prices I've found so far for $455 for 7 days. But to save space and the Earth I want to donate all the big usable stuff to Habitat For Humanity. Their "Restore" (in Oakland) even picks up for you! I just have to send pics of the stuff and schedule the pick up 1-2 weeks in advance... I'd better get on that.

We found out that the wall that we want to take down between the living room and kitchen is, in fact, load bearing. So that means we get to put in a beam. We're going to try and do it recessed so it still keeps an open feel (as open as you can feel in 8' ceilings).

So here's some of our plans we're submitting drawn up by myself and the electrical component done by Alex... Im pretty proud of us. We had to get them printed out at Fedex Office on 42x30 paper! So huge!
I used a free plan/3D program called Sweet Home 3D. Very easy to use. Helped a lot. Alex did the electrical stuff in Photoshop and I did the diagrams in Illustrator. It's a marriage made in heaven...

BEFORE

Hi all!
So, here's some of the "before" photos of the house...

Bought a house!

After years of complaining, hoping, moaning, and dreaming, we were finally able to buy a home in the San Francisco Bay Area! What a miracle! Thanks to low apr's and the foreclosures in the area we were able to make a dream come true.
The property was a bank owned foreclosure -- and thankfully it wasn't previously owned by some single mother with 5 kids struggling to make ends meet (I don't think we could live with ourselves if that was the case...) -- it was previously a rental property owned by a man who had like 6 homes -- so we didn't feel bad about the purchase in that respect.

Anyhoo, this blog is to show the before, during, and after of this mid-century rancher house.
